The response time can be quite slow, as long as 40 seconds. The Voicemate does not require cleaning, and, as an added extra, it has a built-in insulin vial reader that reads Eli Lilly insulin vials. It has an earphone jack. Memory download requires the purchase of special Accu-Chek software and a cable. We found the software unusable with a screen reader.
Unlike the Voicemate, the SureStep must be calibrated manually by pushing a button until the number on the screen corresponds to the number located on the vial of new strips. Its blood glucose test strips are touchable, but require 10 microliters of blood, and you cannot apply additional blood after the test starts. The unit requires cleaning. Memory can be downloaded with free software, which is available on LifeScan's web site, and you need to purchase a cable. We found the software difficult to use with a screen reader, and some reports it generated were not accessible.

As an Engineer this is agreat bit of kit and I'm sure there's useful stuff that can be done with thisdata, it's just working out exactly what to do. Roche supply some software (calledCompass) which can download the data but, in my humble opinion, it's a bitclunky, and there's far more analysis which could be performed. But they'vethought of that too - you can export the data as a CSV file so you can then dowhat you want with it.
Now this is all well andgood if you have a Windows PC or a Palm to hand (the software is available forboth of these platforms), and although I do have a Windows PC, I'd far preferto be able to download everything to my Palmtop - a Sharp Zaurusrunning Linux. I presume there are also other people out there running WindowsCE/PocketPC and Linux on desktop boxes who might alsowant to be able to download their readings without having to use two machines. Therefore I contacted Accu-Chek/Roche to ask whetherthey'd be willing to release the spec of the IR protocol to me. I even offeredto sign an NDA.
So I did a bit of research, downloaded portmon from (this is agreat bit of free software, and there's lot of other interesting stuff overthere too, highly recommended) and started pulling the protocolto bits the hard way.
In the U.S the software is free(If you don't mind having your results storedon-line). It is exactly the same as the U.K version !!!U.S Web link:- www.accu-chek.comSoftware's called Diabetes Assistant.I'm pretty sure you can download the drivers from there as well, but don'tquote me on that :)Yet again the U.K gets ripped of.Phil CType I, dx 5 yrs, North Wales

I used to use an Accu-Check Advantage but Roche's so called help deskwas so unhelpful when I tried to get control solutions I gave up andbought a One Touch Ultra. Best move I made. Lifescan's help desk is verygood, you have to buy a cable to connect to the computer but it onlycost £10 and came the next morning after ordering it and the software isvery good and a free download from their web site. Would not touch aRoche product with a barge pole now.Julian.--===================================Julian Austin. I've just bought the software an IR adaptor and I'm very pleased withit. At the same time I had them send me some free batteries andcontrol solution for my two active meters. The helpline were veryerr... helpfull.p.s. you can use the IR adaptor for connecting your mobile phone toyour pc too (nokia data suite for 8310 works nicely), only to use thecompass software you have to disable the IR port in the device manageras the compass software seems to access it directy (with its own builtin drivers) and sees a conflict if you have the XP IR port driversenabled.
I paid my money and ordered the software which at £29 was not a bad price.I got the software supplied with a Tekram IRMate210B a quality industry stdIrDa device and cables. The drivers are built into the Compass program sousing any external drivers will stop the diabetes program downloadingproperly. It works fine. It didn't take forever to arrive and I calledRoche who talked me through the installation. No problems at all. It isjust as good as the Ultra software with all the cables for that. I use bothmeters as the Ultra is my "work" meter. I have no preference between themexcept the finger pricker on the Active is less painful and the Ultra tendsto give a slightly higher reading!BTW. With the windows drivers installed I can use the IR device with myphone and printer... bonus. The only problem I've had was when I moved toWindows XP as at that time the compass program would not work with windows. These IR devices aren't especially cheap so the cost isn't that bad!Martin.--[mart64, dx August 1998, T2)][NovoRapid x3 & Insulatard x2 (mostly)][Metformin - 4x500mg, Atorvastatin 1x10mg, Losartan Potassium 1x50mg]

Sorry It's laken so long for me to reply (burst another blood vestle in myeye and have been staying as far away from the 'puter as possible:( Youright about the bandwidth on BS there is a page that expllanes it all here - =9c77383581dd8d97dfb4db817ece952b&threadid=16880I've now got my software from Roche (It took 2 weeks) and I gotta say apartfrom the IR download working (because they build in specific IR drivers soyou have to buy there software/IR module) I'm not overly impressed - Iadmittedly have not played with it too much but I think the reports could bemade better if they included the information about Carb intake etc...PC upgrades its pretty much the same here I got two P400's (one running at233 due to a burnt out over clocked CPU) both with 128meg and untold harddrive space spanned out over about 8 drives, so I'm also in real need of aupgrade or two. I agree with your choice of CPU - seems to be the best valueat the moment - if I get one it will be my first non Intel chip ...everCheersCoz
Have A look here (click the link for the diabetes pages)A link there to download software, some custom-built stuff from a guy in the US who has also adapted it to use UK standards. I keep a copy of it there for anyone in the UK who might want to use it, with his permission naturally. It's called Health and is freeware. Much more comprehensive.Straight link to the zip file -- A BTOpenworld Asylum Seekerratty at flyingrat dot net
Product Characteristics The Accu-Chek Compact Plus has many wonderful features. Some of the more highly talked about ones include the existence of a preloaded drum for no strip handling, a no coding feature, detachable lancet device, 5-second results and alternate test site options. This particular glucose meter has a 300-value memory which stores time and date information as well as various averages in order for you to compare your past testing results with one another. You can also download the information onto your PC by using the Accu-Chek Compass software.
Almost all blood glucose companies now provide diabetes management software, much of which is available to download for free. Diabetes management software includes the SLdiary by Sinovo, Compass by Accu-Chek, OneTouch diabetes management software from Lifescan, Smartpix.
Log Sheet or Spreadsheet A log sheet is an alternative or adjunct to software. There are a lot of different log sheets out there, but the best, in my opinion, is one developed by Jean-François Yale, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, Crabtree Nutrition Laboratories, McGill Nutrition and Food Science Centre, Royal Victoria Hospital, and Director, Metabolic Day Centre. I met with him in Montreal in August 2002, and at that time he authorized me to make his log sheet available on my Web site. Dr. Yale's log sheet lets you enter blood glucose readings, insulin dosages, carbohydrate grams, and exercise (which you can put on a scale of 1 to 5) for any hour of the day. Before printing the log sheets remember to change the page layout to landscape and when you are finished to change it back to the usual portrait layout. Two pages of the log sheet cover the seven days of the week. It is an Adobe Acrobat PDF file, which requires the free Acrobat Reader, available at , if you don't have it already. Download the log sheet at February 1, 2010:HumaLogger is a new website that makes it easy for you to log your blood glucose levels online. Following are their service plans: Monthly: $2 monthly Yearly: $24 yearly Both monthly and yearly services include: Glucose Log, Blood Pressure Log, Medication INtake Log, Weight Log and Exercise Log. They provide a free 14 days trial which you can subscribe to on their website here: 2b1af7f3a8
