Although the effects of clove buds on the immune system have been previously reported, so far no research has been conducted to investigate the effects of clove buds on the gastrointestinal tract of broiler chickens. Thus, this study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of clove buds on jejunal morphology, mucus secretion, and intestinal barrier function of broiler chickens.
Anti-inflammatory effects of clove buds have been previously reported (Nahar et al., 2008; Kiran et al., 2015; Molina-Infante et al., 2016; Sharma et al., 2016). In this regard, the anti-inflammatory effects of clove buds have been shown in the treatment of in vivo models of arthritis (Nahar et al., 2008), sepsis (Kiran et al., 2015), and inflammatory bowel disease (Molina-Infante et al., 2016), which might be useful to reduce problems such as intestinal disorders and diarrhea during acute phase of the disease. In addition, clove oil (1% and 2%) has been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory effects in heat-stress challenged broilers (Khan et al., 2016).
The study was carried out on 71 one-day-old male broiler chickens allocated to seven treatment groups. Each treatment included 7 replicate cages, and the treatments were fed diets containing 0, 0.5, 1, or 2 % of clove buds, and one negative control group, fed a normal diet throughout the trial. The experiment lasted for 21 days. The experimental diet consisted of wheat, wheat bran, maize, distillers’ grain, wheat gluten, soybean meal, lysine, salt, and a vitamin-mineral premix (Nutrient data are shown in Table 1).
We are hypothesizing that the antimicrobial and antiparasitic effects of clove buds in broilers may be due to the presence of volatile oils and eugenol, and the antimicrobial and antiparasitic effects of Beta-caryophyllene and eugenyl acetate may be due to the individual effects. Also, the tannins of the oil of clove buds may have the antiinflammatory effects (Kumar et al., 2014). To date, no previous study has assessed the effects of clove buds extract on the intestinal microflora of broilers. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effects of Clove buds extract (30 mg/kg) on the intestinal microflora of broilers using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis. This study may be a first step towards the assessment of the antimicrobial and antiparasitic effects of clove buds on broilers.

One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
