Rob Moore, the studio vice chairman stated that a sequel would be developed, with the film's lead actors contractually obligated to return.[29] In January 2010, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of Zombieland, were hired to write the script for the sequel.[30][31] Stephen Sommers was originally going to return as director of the sequel, but as of January 2011, Sommers will not be returning to direct.[32][33] Production on the film will begin in June and the film will likely be released in 2012, also seeing the return of Storm Shadow actor, Lee Byung-hun.[34] On January 17, 2011, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed once again that Lee Byung-hun will reprise his role as Storm Shadow in the sequel.[35] Channing Tatum and Ray Park are also returning to the film as Duke and Snake-Eyes, respectively. Paramount Pictures announced that Jon Chu will direct the sequel. The film was released on March 29, 2013 as G.I. Joe: Retaliation .[36][37]
G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra featured a wide cast of characters from the toy and cartoon series, including Duke, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander and Heavy Duty. The Mummy star Brendan Fraser also pops up in a surprise cameo as Sergeant Stone, a drill instructor who helps Heavy Duty train Duke and Ripcord. It's a tiny part ultimately since he only observes Duke getting beaten up by Snake Eyes during training, before Tatum's soldier finally knocks him down - which is apparently something that's never happened. Stone then proclaims Duke a \"Joe.\"
Over the next four years, the Doctor managed to create to use his nanomites to create the Neo-Viper project and develop the warheads needed for McCullen's plan for world domination. He also showed a fascination towards the cobra snakes, making the species a symbol of his work.
Although Cobra Commander was locked up for his crimes, his takeover of M.A.R.S. and renaming it as COBRA had serious effects as the entire organization (including Zartan) became loyal to him, sporting the cobra insignia and began carrying out his plans. He and Destro were also taken to a prison facility in Germany where they were kept inside containers and that he was also being given a new mask to keep him alive.
Despite hating the flick, Tatum was willing to come back a few years later to reprise the role of Duke in what was essentially a glorified cameo for the (much better) sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation. You can listen to Tatum and Stern talk about the first movie below: 59ce067264
