Scooped up by Grammy-winning producer RZA (the Uncreated Soul ), `The God's Son's Not Dead' was one of the most anticipated albums of the year; and for good reason, with the album's rousing ''G.O.A.T.'' track a clear highlight. The album itself is a complicated vehicle, leaning on the past while offering a window on its future. First-time producer Eric Adhiambo (Jadakiss, Styles P) offers the musical groundwork, with contributions from all corners of the 'hood. Then RZA and his associates, one of the most disparate groups of people on one track, take over. A number of pros have been making landmark contributions to the big-time rap game for years, but no one has ever carved out a niche like the Wu-Tang Clan has. Husalah is clearly the most aggressive, with his counterparts lending a lyrical weight that makes him the torchbearer of the Wu-Tang Clan. But he's also the only rapper speaking his mind, about the effects of the big city, dealing with the AIDS crisis, and the American mentality. His rhymes are savage, but his world is one of morals and justice. And he doesn't talk just about himself. The album ends with a manifesto -- a fitting close to one of the most important rap albums of the year.

Husalah lives in New Jersey and has been steadily releasing albums since 2004. His new Self-Loathing is the first of his projects to be released on a label. The group called Prophecy Generation is also headed by Husalah, and their 2008 debut, Grave In My Reach, is also on Sounds Of Vinyl.

Husalah is a talent who may have to work his way up from the underground in order to break through, but he's certainly a talent. His strength comes from his ability to mine the darkness inside the human mind, then bring it out. It's a dark, depressing album, but it's also a palliative for the soul, and that's something more than merely a good rap record.

It's more than that, though. In a sense, Husalah has created a whole new genre of rap, one that he has fashioned into something dark and intensely personal. For a rap album to be this caustic and merciless in its assault on the world is something new, and his new album is so strong that it's hard to imagine anyone else successfully trying something like this.
